A tragic accident in Zambia's north.

At least 51 people were killed on Thursday when a bus and a truck collided on a main road 100 km outside of the capital Lusaka.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but witness accounts suggest it happened as the bus swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLICE SPOKESPERSON, ELIZABETH KANJELA, SAYING:

"So far we can confirm that 51 people have died and about 15 people actually survived and are in hospital receiving treatment."

Zambian roads are notoriously dangerous.

Most are narrow, and buses and other vehicles are often overloaded or poorly maintained.

Survivors suffering from cuts and bruises were being treated in a nearby hospital.

Others, with more serious injuries were taken to Lusaka.
