Senate confirms Kerry as secretary of state

U.S. Senator John Kerry wins overwhelming support from the Senate to become the next U.S. Secretary of State.

The five-term senator and one time presidential candidate won broad support from Democrats and Republicans.

Earlier Kerry spoke the Committee he once chaired -- the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SENATOR JOHN KERRY AND U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE NOMINEE SAYING:

"What a privilege, seriously, to work with you and now to work with you in a different way. I thank you very, very much."

Kerry will succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.
