PRESENTED BY ENA-HELENA EVER

Christoph Jarmer took his time. Since 2008, he has been working on a musical self-portrait under the invisibility cape of his moniker "Esteban's", alongside the "familiar" identity as Garish guitarist.
After "Serenity" follows Longplayer number two; "IR" on the album cover stands for "In Rebellion". Jamer doesn't allude to political events here, but rather interprets this "Rebellion" on a personal level: the fight with and against himself. Thus, the eleven tracks have become the soundtrack to an unusual process of self-discovery. All the more astonishing then that out of it has come not a cerebral, but rather a highly catchy and relaxed album, which seems to radiate in its entirety.
Whether ultimately autobiographical or not: The game between contemplation („Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you: a Failure." -- Not A Whit Better) and public confession („I´ve been a monster." - Monster), between silence and quantity proves highly successful for the listener. If nothing else, because it is gently and skillfully wrapped in (in the best sense of the word) beautiful songwriting.
Jarmer slips into the role of a storyteller, who lets himself be carried at times by his own agile guitarplucking, at times by the enchanting and still kitsch-free string arrangements.
"IR" masterly balances itself in a large and yet intimate world of sound, bringing to the point the best "Esteban's" qualities. The result is an album that gains magnitude in holding back; in a world where screaming for attention is a daily occurrence, it might force itself into the role of an outsider, but could also become a positive exception.
