Afghan children at risk from winter weather

These children are some of the hundreds of thousands of internally displaced residents in Afghanistan.

And in winter they become even more vulnerable.

Amnesty International says at least 17 Afghans in settlements like this have died from the cold weather in the first two weeks of January - 11 of them were children.

This man says his three-year-old boy died due to the freezing temperatures. His baby girl died shortly afterwards.

The previous winter was unusually cold in Afghanistan - harsh weather conditions resulted in the deaths of over 100 people - most of them children.

Amnesty and other organisations are once again calling on the Afghan government to avoid a repeat of last year's tragedy.

Mohammed Wali, a displaced Afghan, says Kabul's priorities should be to bring peace to Afghanistan first and shelter second.

Decades of conflict have left Afghanistan with one of the highest internally displaced populations in the world, estimated to be in excess of 450,000 people.
