Since the summer of 2010, David McAllister of the CDU has been state premier of Lower Saxony. And he wants to keep his job. The lawyer and self-described provincial is popular across the state and is well ahead of SPD challenger Stephan Weil in opinion polls. But because his coalition partner, the FDP, is flagging, McAllister has to fight for his position.
