Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling hit the red carpet for the premiere of crime movie "Gangster Squad" in Los Angeles.

The trench coat and fedora-filled film plays like "The Untouchables" on speed, as tommy guns blare, sultry call girls cast come hither looks and the LAPD fight to keep the mafia out of L.A. in the 1940s and 1950s.

On the red carpet Penn said he was attracted to the era of the film.

SOUNDBITE: Sean Penn, actor, saying (English):

"I liked this script and this director. I can't really explain it but it was a ride I hadn't taken, the kind of movie it is, the genre it is, so I thought it would be some fun."

Brolin, who was arrested on New Year's Day for public intoxication, plays an LAPD officer in the film.

He alluded to his recent run-in with the law as he discussed his relationship with LA police.

SOUNDBITE: Josh Brolin, actor, saying (English):

"L.A. law enforcement is great. I mean, look, I've been here since I was a kid, you know. I've known a lot of amazing law enforcement guys. I met a lot of guys for this movie, guys who were 80 years old that were in law enforcement 40, 50 years ago. So yeah, I have a good relationship with them."

Actress Emma Stone balances out all the testosterone as a gangster moll who finds herself torn between Penn and Gosling's characters.

SOUNDBITE: Emma Stone, actress, saying (English):

"It was lovely...It was definitely not a bad day at the office."

"Gangster Squad" rolls into U.S. theaters on January 11.
