Triumph's all-new Daytona 675R supersports is being put through its paces in a world first test by MCN Senior Road Tester Michael Neeves. These are his first impressions:

"We're at the Cartagena circuit in southern Spain testing the new Triumph Daytona 675R.

"It's brand new from the ground up, with a heavily-revised short-stroke engine making more power, torque and revs. It has a new cylinder block, crankcase, gearbox and twin injectors. A new clutch, similar to Kawasaki's new ZX-6R 636, has two-way ramps letting it slip off the throttle and grip the clutch plates tighter on the throttle. It allows lighter clutch springs and a lighter lever action.

"There's a new frame with more aggressive steering geometry, new swingarm, subframe and the exhaust exits along the side for the bike, which gives the Triumph better agility. It has new wheels, brakes, suspension...the list goes on. It's an impressive job from the British firm.

"It's still the Daytona we know and love -- but then some. It's fast and easy to ride and the engine is packed with grunt and screams down the straights with that lovely three-cylinder yowl. Handling, brakes and grip from the Pirelli Diablo Super Corsa SP tyres is all exceptional. It's roomy and the clutch, gearbox and throttle are very smooth -- it's very easy to ride fast.

"It'll make a superb road bike, trackday weapon or basis for a racer. It's an impressive machine.
