At least 60 crushed to death in Ivory Coast stampede

At least 60 people are crushed to death in a stampede in the Ivory Coast.

A crowd had gathered outside a stadium in Abidjan to watch fireworks. Security forces tried to break up the crowd triggering a panic.

President Alassane Ouattara came to scene.

(SOUNDBITE)(French) IVORY COAST PRESIDENT ALASSANE OUATTARA, SAYING

"It's a national tragedy, of course. And I really hope that we will push ourselves to investigate to see what could have prevented this tragedy so that it will not happen again."

About 49 people were injured in the stampede.

A mother grieves for two children who are still missing.

The incident was the worst since 2010, when a stampede at a stadium during a football match killed 18 people.
