India rape victim airlifted to Singapore

The student whose gang-rape aboard a bus in New Delhi has shocked India has been airlifted to this hospital in Singapore.

She was beaten and then thrown from the moving vehicle after an ordeal that last nearly an hour.

Indian medical staff who travelled to Singapore with her left the hospital after ensuring her safe arrival.

Doctors in India say the 23-year-old remains seriously ill since the attack on December 16th.

"With the fortitude and courage she has survived the after-effects of the injury so far but her condition continues to be critical."

The attack has unleashed a wave of protests across India, some leading to clashes with police.

The government and police have come under fire from political parties and women's rights groups who accuse both of failing to tackle rising numbers of rapes.
