Fires leave hundreds homeless

A fire swept through two rows of apartments in metropolitan Manila's Quezon City district on Tuesday (December 25), and killed six people, a fire official said.

The casualties, all from one family, were trapped inside their two-storey flat.

Another victim is still missing, local media said.

Another fire in the San Juan district struck a shanty community destroying hundreds of homes and leaving thousands of people homeless.

Families salvaged their belongings and sought shelter in a basketball court.

Fires are common in shanty areas in metropolitan Manila, a densely populated capital of nearly 12 million inhabitants.
