Thousands of revellers and spiritualists converge on one of Britain's most ancient sites for an "End of World" party, which coincides with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Many people arrived at the prehistoric site on Thursday (December 20), celebrating through the night until sunrise shortly after 0800 local (0800GMT) on Friday (December 21).

Friday has seen particularly big numbers - around 5,000 - as the day also marks the end of the 5,125-Mayan calendar cycle, which some doomsayers believe will bring about the end of the world.

Just like the Mayan culture, ancient druids were thought to be keen astronomers and used the stones at Stonehenge as a way to tell the time.
