Ukraine's winter weather brings the army in.

Tanks are clearing the roads and towing trucks trapped in the snow.

At least 37 people have died in the extreme cold spell - during which temperatures have fallen below minus 20 Celsius in some parts of the country.

Authorities have set up more than 1,500 "warming points" where emergency workers give out tea and sandwiches.

They are also distributing hot food to the homeless, who are most vulnerable during the winter.

There was less snow on the streets in Russia's capital, but Moscow residents were also coping with the cold.

"We are Russians, the cold is normal. How do we protect ourselves? Easily - we put on fur coats, what else can we do?"

Siberia is facing abnormal frosts, with some cities seeing temperatures below minus 40.

The dangerously low temperatures have prompted some school closures and local authorities are recommending that people stay at home.
