Cyclone leaves Samoans homeless

Buildings and cars wrecked in the path of Cyclone Evan.

The storm ripped through the South Pacific nation of Samoa bringing 100mph winds that felled trees and power lines.

The Ministry of Health offices are serving as a shelter to help the thousands who are now homeless.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) HEALTH MINISTRY ASSISTANT SOSEFINA TALAUTA SAYING:

"I think the emotional part of it hasn't really hit us yet. We're just glad we're able to help."

To the southwest, in Fiji, the government warned that gale force winds were on their way.

Resorts on the island were preparing guests, who seemed to be taking the approaching storm in stride.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) AUSTRALIAN TOURIST BRUCE GOLLAM SAYING:

"It says it's going to be pretty close but I think we'll be OK. I'm not worried too much."

(SOUNDBITE)(English) HONEYMOONER CLINT LEDGARD SAYING:

"We're going to hide in the bath tub with a mattress over our heads."

Tourists on some islands in the path of the storm are being evacuated.

Others were waiting at the airport to leave Fiji before the cyclone hits.
