Protesters and police fight running battles into the night in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Demonstrators threw rocks at police... who fired back with tear gas.

Tens of thousands have been protesting for days against President Mohamed Mursi's plan to widen the scope of his powers beyond the reach of the country's judicial system.

At the headquarters of Mursi's party, the Muslim Brotherhood, more violent demonstrations.

Protesters tore down the headquarters sign, and threw rocks at a police van.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation.

But opponents say Mursi is behaving like a modern-day pharaoh.
