Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou got a shellacking from the Economist in an article titled "Ma the Bumbler." According to the article, Ma's (lack of) leadership is in part to blame for the fact that Taiwan salaries have stagnated for a decade and for rampant property speculation that have made it impossible for the average working family in Taipei to buy housing.

Ma Ying-jeou wants nothing more than for the average Taiwanese person to love him, so when he does something that proves to be temporarily unpopular — such as raising electricity rates or saving Taiwan's national pension scheme from bankruptcy — he'll do a climb-down, which makes him appear indecisive and not unpresidential.
Ma has also sold Taiwan out to the Communists in Beijing. The Economist doesn't mention that, but we think it's important to mention this. Selling Taiwan out to China is the only policy area where Ma has shown true vision and decisiveness. Way to go Ma!
