The lights are back on in New York's Subway system.

At least partially.

For the system's 5 million riders each weekday ... any good news is a relief.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) COMMUTER, TRACY ALMER, SAYING:

"Yeah, I walked about five miles yesterday to and from work, so I'm happy to have the subways back for the time being, so."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) COMMUTER, ADAM RUSHBAUM, SAYING:

"It's great. It's more convenient for sure and it's...I walked to work yesterday, so I walked about 70 blocks."

Four of the seven subway tunnels remain flooded and there is still no service in Manhattan below 34th Street.

But for New Yorkers hearing the rumble of subway trains for the first time in four days, it points to one sign of recovery from Sandy's devastating blow.
