Soldiers keep the peace on Lebanese streets after clashes here in Tripoli.

Sporadic fighting has broken out in recent days after a central intelligence officer was assassinated in a blast on Friday.

Now the government and military are scrambling to restore calm in Tripoli and Beirut.

On Tuesday, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton met with Prime Minister Najib Mikati to discuss the events.

Opposition leaders are calling for Mikati's resignation, citing his close ties to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Later Ashton also met with President Michel Sulieman.

Ashton is in Lebanon for a one-day visit as part of a five-day tour of the Middle East.
