Survivors mourn Peru mudslide victims

Coffins are prepared for the victims of a mudslide in northern Peru.

Heavy rains triggered the devastation which left at last 11 dead and 20 still missing.

This woman steps over the ruins of her home.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) GIOVANA MEDINA, MUDSLIDE SURVIVOR, SAYING:

"They took the baby from me and ran through the heavy rain. because my knee is bad I couldn't walk and they pushed me to safety. It was terrible, we didn't have time for anything. In seconds all the houses were destroyed."

The authorities supplied tents to house the homeless and neighbours set up a communal kitchen.

As night fell on Thursday, soldiers suspended the search for victims.
