The Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk took one last look at the body of the late king on Wednesday (October 17) in Beijing, before it was flown back home to Phnom Penh.

Sihanouk's grieving wife and son prayed by the body of the late king, who was surrounded by white flowers and flanked by Buddhist monks dressed in orange robes.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen also paid his respects to Sihanouk, who died on Monday (October 15) in a Beijing hospital at the age of 89.

Officials and royals arrived in Beijing earlier this week to collect the body.

A pre-eminent figure in Cambodia's history for seven decades, who freed Cambodia from colonialism, Sihanouk will also be remembered as a puppet kept by the Khmer Rouge during their 1970s reign of terror that killed almost a quarter of the Cambodian population.

His close aide, Prince Sisowath Thomico, said Sihanouk had died of heart failure.
