Emergency services attend a shooting at the US-Canadian border, which left a border officer critically wounded.

A gunman opened fire on Tuesday (October 16) shooting the Canadian female officer in the neck at a security booth on the main crossing between Washington state and British Columbia.

The shooter then turned the gun on himself and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wounded officer was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition as investigations began into what prompted the shooting.

The suspect's van, which had Washington state licence plates, is to be forensically examined.

Authorities on both sides of the border have pledged full cooperation in investigating the incident.
