Thousands pray for girl shot by Taliban

Thousands gather in Karachi to show support for a Pakistani schoolgirl who is fighting for her life after being shot by Taliban gunmen. Sunday's demonstration was the biggest by far since the attack on Malala Yousafzai.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) FAROOQ SATTAR, A LEADER OF MUTTAHIDA QAUMI MOVEMENT (MQM) PARTY, SAYING:

"Malala is the bright face of Pakistan. A conspiracy has been done to ditch the country in the darkness of ignorance by putting out this light."

Others offered prayers for the 14 year old.

Malala's shooting on Tuesday was the culmination of years of campaigning that had pitted the fearless young girl against one of Pakistan's most ruthless Taliban commanders in Swat Valley who ordered the closure of all girls' schools in 2009.

Malala, whose father runs a girl's school in Swat, launched a campaign for girls' education that won her Pakistan's highest civilian honor and death threats from the Taliban.
