A lavish final send-off for Unification Church founder Sun Myung Moon in South Korea.

Thousands gathered at a church-owned mansion to pay their respects to the self-proclaimed messiah and 'true parent' after a two week mourning period.

Moon's youngest son, Hyung Jin, who took over church reins four years ago, told mourners his father had accomplished God's will and the holy tasks entrusted to him.

Church leaders said around 35,000 followers attended the service including thousands from abroad - like 21-year-old New Yorker.

"This is gonna be one of the most precious times and history of this world and I'm really honoured to be here."

Moon, a staunch anti-communist, was the founder of a hugely successful business empire as well as a church.

Critics have long accused the church - famous for its mass weddings - of indoctrinating its followers, often described as 'Moonies', and questioned its murky finances.

The 92-year-old died two weeks ago of complications related to pneumonia.

He is survived by his wife and 10 of their 13 children.
