Demonstrators clashed with riot police on Friday (September 14) outside the walls of the American consulate in Egypt's second city, Alexandria.

The clashes followed earlier demonstrations where protesters, angry at a film insulting the Prophet Mohammed, ripped up a mock American flag.

Thousands demonstrated elsewhere in Egypt's coastal city against the film which they viewed as blasphemy.

Many Muslims regard any depiction of the Prophet Mohammed as blasphemous and the film that portrayed him as a womanizer and religious fake has provoked outrage across the Middle East and led to the storming of several U.S. missions in the region.
