Obama: True legacy of 9-11 will be a safer world

U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle are joined by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at the Pentagon Tuesday where the President laid a wreath to mark the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

11 years after nearly 3,000 people were killed by airliners hijacked by Islamist militants, Obama said the lasting legacy will be one of common purpose.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

"When the history books are written the true legacy of 911 will not be one of fear or hate or division it will be a safer world stronger nation and a people more united than ever before. God bless the memories of those we lost. God bless these United States of America."

Ceremonies are also being held in New York and Pennsylvania to mark the anniversary.
