Pauline Marois's victory speech is cut short.

Quebec's Separatist Party leader was celebrating a provincial election win when a gunman opened fire in the theater, killing one and seriously injuring a second.

Shouting, "The English are waking up," a 62-year-old suspect is taken into custody.

The shooter also allegedly started a fire at the theater's rear door.

Police say the second victim is out of danger.

SOUNDBITE: Guy LaPointe, Surete du Quebec, saying (English):

"At this point is we have met with approximately 15 witnesses. The suspect, as you know, is under custody. At this point, we also know that a second victim, we no longer fear for that person's life."

Two weapons of undisclosed caliber were also found at the scene.

The attack is thought to have been politically motivated -- Quebec's Separatist Party wants independence from Canada, a source of concern for some of the minority English-speaking community.
