"The Iceman," a new film about real-life hitman Richard Kuklinski who killed more than 100 people, had audiences at the Venice Film Festival rooting for the bad guy.
Israel-born director Ariel Vromen depicts the notorious mob enforcer as not only a cold-blooded killer but also as a charming, devoted husband and father of two girls.
The Iceman has earned glowing early reviews, in particular for lead actor Michael Shannon, who plays Kuklinski.
The movie contains scenes of Kuklinski as a boy being savagely beaten by his father.
Winona Ryder plays his wife Deborah, and said she avoided researching the role in order to better convey the uncertainty over whether or not she actually knew the extent of her husband's crimes.
The "Little Women" actress added that she was drawn to the project in part because she admired Shannon.
Kuklinski died in prison in 2006 when he was 70 years old.
He became known as the "Iceman" because he sometimes froze the corpses of his victims in order to hide from police their time of death.
