With the help of opening night film 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist', the 69th Venice Film Festival kicked off in style on Wednesday (August 29) night.

Hollywood star Kate Hudson sparkled on the red carpet ahead of her film's screening, accompanied by her musician fiance Matthew Bellamy, famous for fronting English rock band Muse.

Fellow actress Naomi Watts wore a similar colored dress and also pleased the crowds and press gathered outside the palace.

While 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' is out of competition, there are 18 films competing for the top prize, The Golden Lion. Headed by 'Heat' director Michael Mann the judges were out in force to mark the start of the annual event.

The annual cinema showcase is not expecting as many high profile actors as in the previous years, however there are several big names coming up to keep the crowds happy.

Zac Efron, Selena Gomez and Shia LaBeouf are just a few of the expected stars festival-goers can still to look forward to.
