South Africa's ruling African National Congress has expelled Julius Malema, the controversial president of its youth league.

Malema was appealing against five-year suspension for misconduct but, in a turn of events, the party's national disciplinary committee ordered that he vacate his position instead.

The national disciplinary committee said, at a meeting at the party's Johannesburg headquarters late on Wednesday that Malema was an unrepentant repeat offender who did not accept the disciplinary structures of the ANC.
