'US Navy capable of securing Strait of Hormuz'

The Chief of US Naval operations has told Al Jazeera his navy is capable of securing the Strait of Hormuz should it need to.

The strait is considered one of the most strategic waterways on the planet, with one-fifth of the world's oil being shipped through its waters.

The US gets 1.7 million barrels a day from the strait.

It has become a pressure point between Iran and some western nations, after Tehran threatened to close it when EU nations agreed to put an oil embargo on Iran as part of sanctions against its nuclear programme.

Al Jazeera's Imran Khan spoke to Admiral Jonathan Greenert, the US chief of naval operations, at a Middle East Naval Commanders conference in Doha.
