India will mark World Diabetes Day 2011 by illuminating national landmarks in blue light and organising a mass screening programme to raise awareness about the disease.

An estimated one million people died from diabetes-related illnesses in India last year. The World Health Organization has said as many as 50 million Indians have the disease and that number could grow to 100 million in the next 12 months.
