The Egyptian cabinet has called an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss doctors', teachers and transport workers' strikes spreading throughout the country.

Despite the first day of classes last week, many schools have been closed as teachers demand higher pay and education reform.

Several thousand of them gathered in Cairo on Saturday to press home their demands.

Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Cairo.
