Three women from Russian punk band Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in jail on Friday (August 17), an outcome supporters described as the Kremlin leader's "personal revenge". They were found guilty of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, saying they had deliberately offended Russian Orthodox believers by storming the altar of Moscow's main cathedral in February to belt out a song deriding Putin. Supporters of the band staged coordinated protests around the globe in response to the verdict. In New York, several were arrested while marching towards the Russian consulate in Manhattan.

"Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. injured an ankle on the set of the third film in the superhero franchise, causing delays in production, Marvel Studios said on Thursday (August 16). Downey who plays billionaire playboy-turned-superhero Tony Stark in the "Iron Man" and "Avengers" movies, hurt his ankle while performing a stunt during filming. "Iron Man 3" is due in theaters next year.
