It's being called the 'greatest national loss', approximately at Rs 2.5 lakh crore after the CAG reports on three alleged scams were tabled in the Parliament on Friday (August 17). The much-awaited CAG report on the coal block allocation has set the stage for a direct battle between the government and its auditor as CAG pits 'Coalgate' at a 'cautious' estimate of Rs.1.86 lakh crore. Hours after the CAG reports were tabled, Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal came out in the open to defend the coal block allocation stating that the mechanism adopted by the government in allocating coal blocks was absolutely transparent. Meanwhile, the opposition sharpened their attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government, saying that he is directly involved in the coal block allocation scam.
