Piracy threatens Volvo Ocean Race

The second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race will undergo an unprecedented rerouting for fear of the threat of piracy off the East Coast of Africa.

Originally slated to sail from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, the new plans will have boats transferred to an armed ship to be then transported to a safe port a day's sail from Abu Dhabi at which point the sailors will resume the race as normal.

With half of the fleets failing to complete the first leg of the tour by sailing into Cape Town, reliability is proving to be another concern for race organisers.
