Award winning conductor and composer Marvin Hamlisch has died.

A statement released by his family says he collapsed in Los Angeles on August 6 after a brief illness.

Hamlisch scored more than 40 films including "The Way We Were," "Sophie's Choice" and "Ordinary People."

During his career he earned the rare distinction of winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

Marvin Hamlisch was 68 years old.
