This newly-released video purports to show 48 Iranian men detained over the weekened by rebel forces in Syria.

The footage was posted to a social media website and Reuters is unable to independenlty verify its content.

The Free Syrian Army accuses some of the men of being members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, which they say is helping prop-up Syria's embattled government.

A rebel officer pointed to the ID of one of the men, saying it proved he was a member of the Guards.

Iran has denies this, saying the men were on a pilgrimage to Damascus when they were kidnapped on Saturday.

Several Iranian pilgrims have been detained by rebel forces since a bloody uprising began 17 months ago against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
