Twelve miners were trapped in a coal mine that flooded on Wednesday (August 1) in China's northern Shanxi Province.

China's CCTV on Thursday (August 2) said more than 300 rescuers were on site attempting to rescue the miners.

At least four miners who were in good health managed to speak with rescue workers over the phone, CCTV reported, without elaborating on the conditions of the other eight miners.

Twenty-two miners escaped when the shaft was flooded.

Rescuers brought in 13 pumps to try to drain the estimated 8,000 cubic metres water from the pit.
