Refugees flee as Syria clashes worsen

This amateur video purports to show Syrian rebels attacking a government checkpoint in Aleppo.

It was one of several clashes reported across the country's biggest city, which has become a battleground between insurgents and troops loyal to president Bashar al-Assad.

This footage, posted to a social media website, shows residents fleeing their homes ahead of what experts worry will be a bloody confrontation.

Many fleeing the Syrian conflict may end up here - a refugee camp just across the Syrian border in Jordan.

It was officially inaugurated over the weekend by Jordan's foreign minister who called the fighting a "tragedy".

United Nations officials said the country is bracing for an influx of refugees.

"We can only expect that more people will be coming across, more people who will be in need of assistance. We are seeing women and children without their husbands, without their fathers coming across the border."

More than 140,000 Syrians have fled to Jordan since fighting began 16 months ago.
