Syria's opposition boycott local polls

The Syrian government has pushed ahead with municipal elections, as part of what it said are promised political reforms.

Opposition groups, however, boycotted the polls, and many activists no longer believe there is any room for negotiation with the authorities following President Bashar al-Assad's brutal crackdown on protests.
