US debt super committee tearing at the seams

A US bi-partisan Congressional committee that is supposed to reduce America's budget deficit by more than a trillion dollars, appears to be near collapse.

The so-called "super committee" has split along party lines ahead of a Monday deadline to announce a plan as both parties squabble in the media.

Republicans say Democrats will not approve cuts to social programs and want tax increases to accompany spending cuts while Democrats charge their counterparts refuse to raise taxes on the richest Americans.
