Chile's navy on Thursday (July 26) sank a Peruvian boat found to be transporting marijuana near the Chilean-Peruvian border.

Chilean Captain Juan Carlos Ponz, the maritime Governor of Arica Province, said that the boat was found to be carrying 38 packets of pressed marijuana.

Chilean authorities later said that the total haul of marijuana was 38.4 kilos (84.6 pounds).

The incident took place near Victor Cove, about 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of the capital of Santiago.

Officials say one of the two people on board the Peruvian vessel suffered bullet wounds.

Both two men were detained and will appear before a Chilean judge in the city of Iquique in the next 48 hours, officials say.
