01:55And we've gotten to see what Gotham has become
01:59Everything seems fine on the surface but it's all built on this lie
02:05I am the main sort of facilitator of that
02:09It's a secret I think that's eaten away at him
02:12So The Dark Knight Rises is about how that affects Gotham
02:16And how things begin to get worse once again
02:19And now it's Bruce having to deal with a new threat to the city and to himself

04:43And in the midst of I think a lot of cynicism
04:47He remains really idealistic
04:49And someone who really believes in what he does

04:58And she's trying to pull him out of his shell

05:14In this incredible world
05:16He's not tough like no deal
05:17These conversations used to end with an unusual request

05:22I would say Lucius is the brains
05:25Yes, Mr. Wayne, it does come in black
05:27But he also has grown to have a great fondness for Bruce
05:34Lucius and Alfred
05:35Between the two of them
05:37We try to keep his moral compass pointed in the right direction
05:41And Commissioner Gordon, to some extent, has been left on his own
05:45Running the police in Gotham
05:48Jim Gordon really is the conscience of Batman, isn't he?
05:51What's great with Batman's allies is that they really bring interesting questions
05:56That Bruce has to answer in his life
06:06Chris has always had such a strong sense of spectacle
06:10With this good human story to it as well
06:16He turns these big action movies into something very intimate and emotional
06:24You feel very close to all those people
06:33In every movie that Chris has made on the Dark Knight Trilogy
06:37He's been able to keep to great filmmaking in terms of the great characters and the great character arcs
06:48He creates whole worlds that you really can get lost in
07:02What does that mean?
07:04Rise
07:08The Dark Knight Rises is certainly the biggest film that I've undertaken, by far
07:14We really looked back to the silent era of motion pictures
07:18When the image was paramount
07:20When all you had was the scope and scale of location
07:26Thousands of extras, that kind of thing
07:28That's the kind of storytelling I was interested in exploring
07:30Dark Knight Rises is about trying to get some of that romantic scale
07:35And modernism into it in a sort of epic way
07:39We started the shoot in India, then we moved to the UK
07:42After that we went to Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Manhattan
07:46It's been relentless action from start to finish
07:50We've expanded into the largest of genres
07:53The war movie, the disaster film
07:56They add scale, raising the stakes
07:58From a place where they were already extremely heightened
08:01We do get a great kick out of doing this action work
08:08To be in Inverness, Scotland, flying with a fuselage in an aircraft
08:11And four stuntmen hanging off an airplane
08:14With Chris Nolan, as much as we can physically do inside of that lens
08:18Is where he would like to go
08:21We had them on the outside of the aircraft, shooting through the windows
08:24And it was a big thing to come together
08:27It has this wow factor
08:30We're back at Carlington, which is this large hangar
08:34You okay? Yep
08:35A lot of the film takes place underground
08:37So we've built a Gotham sewer system
08:40And we're pumping an enormous amount of water around it
08:44We wanted to fulfill the promise of Batman Begins
08:46Which is that Wayne Manor will be rebuilt exactly as it was
08:49But that the Batcave will be expanded and brought forward technologically
08:55My mother warned me about getting into cars with strange men
08:58This isn't a car
09:00One of the biggest creations was the new flying vehicle
09:03The Bat
09:06He's a big insect
09:07He's nearly 30 foot long and 17 foot wide
09:10It needs to travel very fast up roads
09:13It needs to climb up over buildings
09:17Chris Corbould and Chris's designs are just phenomenal
09:21It's a wonderful new gadget
09:26We have a big stadium that we have to blow up
09:29The Pittsburgh Steelers have kindly allowed us their stadium
09:34We had almost 11,000 people turn up for one day's shooting
09:38To play fans of the Gotham Rogues
09:43The biggest challenge is just the sheer scale of the operation that's going on
09:46We've got thousands of people in the stands, we've got multiple cameras, IMAX cameras
09:53This is probably going to be one of the biggest, most demanding visual effects sequences in the film
09:57Action action!
10:06We needed to up the scale of the city and there's only one place that you can do that and
10:11that's New York
10:12In the Wall Street sequence, there's a big battle between the police and all the mercenaries
10:17They've got something like 1,200 extras
10:22Attention!
10:34Chris really did want to shoot everything as real as possible
10:38So there's no visual effects enhancing the amount of people that are in that scene
10:43This was 8 months of preparation has gone into what you see here
10:47Working with the city, with the departments in order to control this set
10:52Seeing that many bodies in the middle of Wall Street fighting each other
10:57Even if it was controlled chaos, it's still kind of like, wow
11:06People have got them, we have not abandoned you
11:10What does that mean?
11:12It means we're on our own
11:15This is certainly the biggest movie that I've ever worked out
11:19Then, emotionally, it feels like something that a lot of people can tap into
11:25It's wonderful, it kind of brings things full circle
11:31You see, only one end to your journey
11:36Sometimes, a man rises from the darkness
11:40Every great story deserves a great ending, and we've really tried to be true to that
11:45The Dark Knight Rises is our attempt to give that great story its great ending
