Horses have birthdays. But there is something special about horses birthdays - at least in the competition setting. All horses born in one year are said to have the same age. This means that all horses born in,for example, 2000, no matter if they born in January, February, July, or December, have the same age. This ruling was set into place to make it easier to form age groups at competitions. Breeders therefore pay special attention to the birth-month of their horses. They want them to be as old as possible in their year of birth, meaning born in December. This way the horses are more developed and a little stronger than competitors born at the beginning of the year. When training a horse however, chose the real age and don't train it too early - meaning less than three real years of age.
