STORY: Supporters of Mohamed Morsy celebrated in Cairo on Sunday after the announcement that the Muslim Brotherhood candidate had been elected as Egypt's new president.
A jubilant crowd danced and chanted outside the Maadi military hospital where ousted leader Hosni Mubarak - who had been fighting the Muslim Brotherhood for three decades -- was staying after being moved from jail.
Morsy was declared Egypt's first democratic president with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote. The election had deeply polarized Egyptians with some fearful Morsy would usher in an Islamist state and others fearful a Shafik win would mean a return of the Mubarak regime.
Thousands of women supporting Morsy burst into cheers in Cairo's Tahrir Square right after he was named as Egypt's first elected president, greeting a dramatic victory that is tempered by the army's continuing role.
Morsy succeeds Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown 16 months ago after a popular uprising. But he will inherit a position that has been stripped of some of its powers after the military council which has ruled the biggest Arab nation since then has this month curbed the powers of the presidency, meaning the head of state will have to work closely with the army on a planned democratic constitution.
