Colombian police reported on Thursday (June 07) they had rescued a 13-year-old Ecuadorian boy kidnapped on April 25 along with his mother.
According to reports, five armed men kidnapped the two in Majagual, Ecuador, near the Colombian border.
The teenager's mother was released on May 27 close to where the two were kidnapped, but the group continued to hold the boy hostage.
Local police commander Humberto Guatibonza said the boy's father received threatening phone calls and demands for a $500,000 ransom.
"At first the demand was $500,000 for the mother and the son. The boy was being held by criminals on Colombian territory," the official said.
Police investigations and citizen reports led detectives to follow the boy's trail into Colombia where he was found in Puerto Saija, in the province of Cauca.
A Colombian man who was apparently assigned to look after the boy was arrested and the teen was sent to Bogota for medical check-ups before being sent home to his family.
