Inside Story - Israeli elections - 22 Jan 09 - Part 1

With just three weeks left before voters go to the polls, Israel's centre-left government is getting high marks from the country's public for its pounding offensive in Gaza. But Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and her ruling centrist Kadima Party may fall victim to the military's success.

After the war on Gaza it is clear that the upcoming elections will be about security not about peace. Syria no longer wants to talk; the Palestinians are in a very delicate situation, with a weakened Palestinian Authority and increasingly unpopular president.

We ask: How has the war on Gaza affected the domestic political stage? Who has won most of it and who can capitalise on its aftermath? What is the future of the Arabs of Israel?

Joining presenter Kamahl Santamaria on Inside Story are guests Uri Avnery, a writer and former member of the Knesset; Gerald Steinberg, the chair of political studies and director of the conflict resolution programme at Bar Ilan University; and Jamal Zahalka, a member of the Knesset and the chairman of the Balad Bloc in the Knesset.
