Garbage reunites after seven year hiatus

Garbage fans can rejoice and rock out as the band's newest album drops on May 14 after a seven-year hiatus. In Los Angeles, frontwoman Shirley Manson spoke about the group's reason for their extended time apart, what it was like to reunite in the studio for the first time, and the meaning behind their fifth studio album, "Not Your Kind of People."

"There are two main themes running through the record. One is a question of mortality that's running through the entire thing, and the other one is a thread about feeling like an outsider and feeling like a bit of an oddball. You never quite fit in. Instead of looking at that in a negative way, to actually embracing it."
Garbage was formed in 1994. The alternative rock group had hits like "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When it Rains" on an independent label before it was sold to Geffen. Band members became disillusioned and decided to take a break in 2005.

"We just got dismayed. We just constantly felt like we weren't doing good enough and constantly getting compared to other bands' performances. That's just a mad way to live your life; it's insanity. Music and art should never be quantified or measured by chart success or radio play. That's just crazy. We felt we needed to divorce ourselves from that ethos."
Longtime fans of Garbage need not worry if the band's style has changed over the years. Manson said that the group has stayed faithful to its roots.
"Not Your Kind of People" will be released on May 14.
