The US Space Agency, Nasa, is marking five decades of space exploration.

The programme was established in 1958, in response to the Soviet Union launching the Sputnik One satellite.

In an era of shrinking government resources, private industry is playing a larger role, pushing space travel to new horizons.

Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports on the agency's achievements, and failures.
