Residents of the tiny Irish town of Lahardane mark the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

The community was profoundly affected by the disaster at the time.

Nine of its residents died on April 15, 1912 when the Titanic sunk after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

The ceremony, held on Sunday evening, included descendants of those who perished.

"I'm honoured to remember by aunt. And with the passing of time it becomes easier to speak of the tragedy and the effect it had on the family."

"Very deeply touched, very deeply moved. I've never felt so close to my ancestry in my life at this very moment."

Aboard a cruise ship in the North Atlantic on Saturday (April 14), a moment of silence was held to mark the Titanic's sinking.

The ceremony took place aboard the Azamara Journey, one of two boats that converged on the site where the Titanic slipped under the waves just after 2:20 am.

Of the over 2,200 passengers and crew aboard the ship, dubbed "unsinkable" before departure, more than 1,500 died.
