Police in California have a suspect in custody in connection with a shooting incident that left seven people dead at a Christian college.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) OAKLAND POLICE CHIEF, HOWARD JORDAN, SAYING:

"Preliminary investigation led to the identity of the suspect. 43-year old One L. Goh. G-O-H is his last name. His description and our belief that he had fled the area most likely before the first officers arrived."

Police say the suspect allegedly opened fire in a classroom at Oikos University Monday afternoon killing seven and wounding three.

When police arrived on the scene, they rescued people who had locked themselves in buildings, and who were hiding behind desks-- frightened and very scared.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MALE WITNESS SAYING:

"He stood up in the class and just started firing, shot one guy in the chest, shot another person, he just started firing like crazy."

Police say they are still combing through evidence to sort out the details.

The suspect, believed to be a former student, later surrendered at a nearby supermarket.
